Anyone who has lived in the Milwaukie area over the last 50 years and was involved in cars will undoubtedly be familiar with the name MARTIN HEYDEL.

Martin and his brother, Ted, owned the Super King grocery store on King Road in Milwaukie in the late 50's/early 60's. They were always supportive of the young kids who were driving around in their sooped up cars. In fact, Martin had his own sooped up car.

Remembering back to those good old days ... ... Those of us who could not afford to purchase a hot rod magazine would go to Super King to gaze at the magazine covers. Martin was so congenial, he'd come over and tell us to go ahead and look through the magazine - we didn't have to buy it. And, he'd spend some time just visiting with us. We all looked up to him.

In 1968, as times changed, Martin and his brother sold Super King. A couple of years later Martin and his wife Helen purchased the local burger stand in Oswego called The Giant Drive-In. It was well known by all for superb burgers. After 10 years, they sold the drive-in and took a few years sabatical.

Then, in 1988, Martin and Helen decided to purchase the local Milwaukie hamburger drive-in, named LEW'S. If you've not been there for a meal, they have the best old-fashioned burgers and coney islands -- not to mention the milk shakes. (It's on the corner of McLaughlin & Oak Grove Blvd.)

The Annual Cruise at Lew's was started in 1984 prior to Heydel's purchase of the restaurant. It started small, but with Martin's love for cars (and as nostalgia blanketed the land), the Annual Cruise at Lew's has grown to be one of the largest in the Portland Metro area. Martin would present an award for his favorite car each year. He would take pictures of all the cars attending and hang a framed picture collage for everyone to see on the walls of his diner. He so loved doing this - it was his passion.

Martin died in 2000 of cancer. Helen still runs the diner and still sponsors the Cruise-In. September 2002 will be the 20th Annual Cruise at Lew's.
